The weekend will begin on a milder note, but a sharp and fast temperature drop is expected once the front sweeps through early Sunday. This cold blast will also impact areas just north of Rowan County, including Davie and Davidson Counties.
A Mild Saturday Before the Temperature Crash
Saturday will be the most comfortable day of the weekend, with highs climbing into the lower to mid-50s across Rowan County. Similar warmth is expected in Davie County to the north and across Davidson County to the north-northeast. Sunshine and downslope warming will make the afternoon feel pleasant before big changes arrive.
Arctic Front Moves In Sunday
The Arctic front is expected to pass through early Sunday. The system is moisture-starved, so no precipitation is expected, but winds will increase behind the boundary and temperatures will begin dropping steadily through the afternoon.
Highs Sunday in Rowan County should reach the upper 40s to near 50 degrees. Davie and Davidson will follow a similar trend before the colder air arrives.
Sunday Night: Coldest Temperatures of the Season
By late Sunday night, the core of the Arctic air mass settles in, sending temperatures into the mid teens across Rowan County. Davie County, located just to our north, and Davidson County to the north-northeast, will see similar low temperatures.
Wind chills early Monday may fall into the single digits to lower teens, especially in open and rural stretches of the region.
Impacts for Early Next Week
Monday will be a cold day across the entire region, with highs in Rowan, Davie, and Davidson Counties struggling to reach the upper 30s. The good news is that this blast of Arctic air will be brief. Temperatures begin rebounding on Tuesday as the pattern becomes more progressive and the high slides east.
Looking Ahead
After the frigid start to the week, temperatures will gradually climb back toward normal by midweek. Another system may approach late in the week, but confidence remains low at this range.
Residents across Rowan County and our neighbors to the north should prepare now for the sharp temperature drop and the coldest stretch of the season so far.
