With temperatures hovering near freezing early in the day, there is a potential for a wintry mix before a transition to cold rain. As always with early-season winter setups, there are still several uncertainties — but here’s what we know so far.
A Cold Air Damming Setup
A fresh supply of cold, dry air will drop in from the north Thursday night as high pressure builds over the Eastern Seaboard. This is a classic setup for cold-air damming across the Carolinas, where shallow, near-freezing air becomes trapped at the surface. This “wedge” of cold air helps set the stage for winter precipitation when moisture begins moving in from the southwest.
Temperatures early Friday morning may sit very close to 32 degrees, especially in northern Rowan County and higher-elevation foothill areas west of us.
Moisture Returns Early Friday
Moisture associated with a developing low pressure system near the Carolina coast will move in Friday morning. Precipitation looks to begin sometime between sunrise and late morning. The exact arrival time matters — the earlier it shows up, the better the chance that surface temperatures are still near freezing.
Most model guidance suggests that precipitation will initially fall as a mix of rain and snow, with sleet possible in pockets. Areas just above freezing may see a cold rain from the start, while colder spots could briefly see snow.
Where the Wintry Mix Is Most Likely
At this early stage, the most favorable areas for any wintry mix remain:
-
The northern tier of Rowan County
-
Higher terrain just northwest of the county
-
Locations that remain near or below 32 degrees longer Friday morning
Any accumulation would be light and short-lived. Most of Rowan County would transition to a cold rain by early afternoon.
What Could Change
This forecast is still low confidence for several reasons:
1. Surface temperatures may trend slightly warmer or colder.
A change of just 1–2 degrees will influence whether early precipitation falls as rain or a mix.
2. Moisture arrival timing remains uncertain.
If precipitation arrives later, temperatures will be safely above freezing.
3. Model agreement is still limited.
The GFS remains wetter and more wintry, while the European model has trended drier again. Additional updates over the next 24–48 hours will give us a clearer picture.
What You Should Expect
At this point, Friday looks like a cold, damp, and unsettled day regardless of precipitation type. The most likely scenario is:
-
A brief rain/snow mix Friday morning
-
Transition to all cold rain by midday
-
High temperatures stuck near 40 degrees
-
No meaningful accumulation for most of Rowan County
Updates will continue as new data arrives, especially once we get into the Wednesday and Thursday model cycles. As always, stay connected with Rowan County Weather for real-time changes and final forecast adjustments.
