Sunday’s Rain & Ice Chance: What Rowan County Actually Needs to Watch

Thursday, November 27, 2025 - 9:00am

A new storm system arrives this weekend, bringing our next round of wet weather to Rowan County. And as often happens this time of year, questions are already circulating about potential freezing rain. Here’s a clear breakdown of what’s expected, what’s possible, and what Rowan County residents actually need to watch as we move toward Sunday.

Cold Air in Place — But Not Cold Enough Here

High pressure to our north will keep cold air locked over the Carolinas through Saturday. Temperatures will remain 10 to 15 degrees below normal, and overnight lows will drop well into the 20s locally. That sets the stage for the next incoming system on Sunday.

The important detail: although cold air lingers in the atmosphere, temperatures in Rowan County are expected to remain above freezing by the time precipitation arrives. This significantly limits any risk for freezing rain locally.

Freezing Rain Risk Is Focused in the Mountains and Blue Ridge

Model guidance continues to show a small window late Saturday night into early Sunday when some freezing rain could develop — but this is limited to:

  • Higher elevations of western North Carolina

  • The immediate Blue Ridge area

  • Sheltered mountain valleys

These areas are more prone to trapping cold air and can hold surface temperatures at or below freezing long enough for freezing rain to occur. Even there, the current expectation is for a very light and brief period of icing, mainly on elevated surfaces such as railings and trees.

For Rowan County, the atmosphere should warm enough quickly to support all rain.

Timing for Rowan County

Here’s the most likely timeline based on the latest forecast data:

  • Late Saturday Night: Clouds increase, temperatures begin to slowly rise.

  • Sunday Morning (After 10 AM): Rain develops and spreads north across the region.

  • Sunday Afternoon and Evening: Periods of steady rain continue.

  • Sunday Night: Rain gradually tapers as the front settles south of the area.

Temperatures during precipitation should stay well above freezing, with highs topping out near the upper 40s.

Why the Freezing Rain Question Keeps Coming Up

Forecast models are showing different speeds and moisture amounts with this system. The GFS and ECMWF both slowed down, delaying moisture arrival. The Canadian model remains a bit faster and colder. Because of these competing signals, winter weather watchers have flagged the possibility of freezing rain.

However, the more likely scenario continues to be a drier and slower solution, which favors surface temperatures rising above freezing before any precipitation reaches Rowan County.

Additionally, ensemble data continues to show very low ice probabilities locally. The LREF ensemble mean shows only a 30 to 40 percent chance of light icing in the mountains, dropping to near zero outside of those locations.

Bottom Line for Rowan County

  • Rain is expected Sunday.

  • Freezing rain is not expected in Rowan County.

  • The freezing rain risk remains confined to the higher elevations.

  • No travel impacts are expected locally.

Cold air will remain in place into early next week, but temperatures should stay warm enough to keep precipitation in the form of rain.
