From Mild to Freezing: Tracking Rowan County’s Weekend Temperature Swing

Friday, November 7, 2025 - 6:35am

After a week of pleasant fall weather, Rowan County is about to experience one of the sharpest temperature drops of the season. The shift begins this weekend as a strong cold front moves across the region, replacing today’s mild sunshine with a true taste of winter by early next week.

A Warm Start to the Weekend

Friday and Saturday will keep the fall feel going with highs near the upper 60s to low 70s. Most of the area will stay dry through much of Saturday, with only a small chance for an isolated shower or rumble of thunder late in the evening. Southwest winds will bring in slightly warmer air ahead of the front.

The Front Arrives Sunday

A strong cold front sweeps across the Carolinas on Sunday. While the day will start partly sunny, scattered showers and perhaps a few brief thunderstorms could develop ahead of the boundary. Rain chances remain low overall, but gusty winds may pick up as the front moves through. Temperatures will still reach the low 70s before a sharp evening cooldown begins.

A Major Temperature Drop

Behind the front, much colder air surges in from the northwest. Lows Sunday night fall into the 30s, and by Monday, afternoon highs will struggle to reach the upper 40s. Monday night will bring the first hard freeze of the season, with temperatures dropping into the mid-20s across most of Rowan County.

What It Means for You

This type of sharp swing is typical in November, but it can catch people off guard. Now is the time to protect sensitive plants, disconnect outdoor hoses, and make sure pets have a warm place to stay as the cold settles in.

While mountain communities could see some snowflakes early Monday, our local forecast stays dry — just cold. Temperatures will slowly rebound by midweek, returning closer to seasonal norms by Thursday.
