advertise your local business here »After a stretch of dry, sunny weather across Rowan County, a much-needed soaking rain is finally on the way. A cold air wedge pattern will take shape tonight, funneling cool air down the east side of the Appalachians and setting up days of low clouds, light wind, and steady rainfall.
Rain Returns Tonight and Sticks Around
Showers begin to move in late Sunday night and continue off and on through much of the upcoming week. The heaviest rainfall is expected Monday into Tuesday as moisture rides up and over the cooler surface air. Most areas in Rowan County can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain, with locally higher totals possible, especially in the southern and western parts of the county.
While this system won’t bring severe storms or high winds, it will keep skies gray and temperatures well below normal. Highs will stay in the low to mid-50s through midweek, nearly 10 degrees below average for late October.
A Welcome Soaking for Dry Ground
Despite a few brief downpours earlier this month, rainfall totals have been running below average across the region. The incoming system will help replenish soil moisture and improve conditions for lawns and fall crops. Local ponds, streams, and farm fields that have been showing signs of dryness should see some improvement by midweek.
Minimal Flooding Concerns, But Watch Low Spots
The rain will fall over several days rather than all at once, keeping the flood risk low overall. However, poor drainage areas and low-lying spots could see minor ponding or standing water, especially by Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Looking Ahead
Rain chances linger through Thursday as another system moves in midweek, but gradual clearing and drier weather are expected by late week. Cooler-than-normal temperatures will continue even after the rain ends, with highs holding in the 50s and lows dipping into the 40s.
