Increased Fire Danger This Afternoon Across the Region

Thursday, October 23, 2025 - 6:42am

A Fire Danger Statement is in effect from 11 AM through this evening for western North Carolina, the South Carolina Upstate, and northeast Georgia.

Dry and breezy conditions will return this afternoon, creating another day of elevated fire danger. Minimum relative humidity levels will drop to between 20 and 30 percent, while wind gusts of 15 to 25 mph are expected. Combined with dry ground and vegetation, these conditions will make it easier for fires to start and spread rapidly.

Residents are strongly urged to avoid outdoor burning today. Check with your local burn permitting authorities for the latest guidance before burning.

If burning is allowed, use extreme caution — fires can quickly get out of control in these conditions. Even small sparks from equipment or discarded cigarettes can ignite dry grass or leaves.

Rowan County Weather will continue to monitor conditions throughout the day and post updates if any changes occur.
