What’s Happening
Behind a departing cold front, dry and breezy conditions have returned to the region. Afternoon relative humidity values are expected to drop into the 25–30% range, and occasional wind gusts may reach 15 to 20 mph. These conditions, combined with dry fuel levels, will lead to an increased risk of fires spreading quickly.
What This Means for Rowan County
While this is not a Red Flag Warning, it does mean any outdoor burning could become dangerous in a short amount of time. Even small campfires, brush piles, or debris burns can spread out of control when humidity is low and winds are gusty.
Safety Recommendations
-
Avoid outdoor burning until conditions improve.
-
If you must burn, check with local burn permitting authorities before doing so.
-
Keep water sources or extinguishing tools nearby.
-
Never leave a fire unattended, and make sure it’s fully out before leaving the area.
Looking Ahead
Humidity levels are expected to recover overnight as winds calm, bringing less risk into Thursday. However, continued dry air will keep fire danger elevated through the end of the week — especially during the afternoon hours.
Stay weather-aware, and use extra caution with any outdoor activity that could spark a flame.
