October Warmth Before the Front: How Unusual Is 80° This Late in the Season?

Monday, October 6, 2025 - 8:01am

As Rowan County enjoys another day with highs near 80 degrees, it might not feel much like October just yet. With clear skies, light winds, and warm afternoons, this week is starting more like late summer than early fall. But just how unusual is it to see this kind of warmth in early October?

Above-Average Temperatures

The average high for early October in Rowan County typically runs in the low to mid-70s. Afternoon readings near 80 degrees are about five to eight degrees above normal. While not record-setting, it’s a reminder that the transition from summer to fall doesn’t happen overnight. A strong ridge of high pressure across the Southeast has been keeping skies mostly sunny and temperatures above normal since the weekend.

A Front on the Way

That pattern is about to change. A cold front arriving Wednesday will bring a noticeable shift — along with showers and a few thunderstorms. Behind it, much cooler and drier air will move in for the second half of the week. By Thursday and Friday, highs will fall back into the mid to upper 60s, with morning lows dipping into the 40s by the weekend.

A Typical October Turn

This type of warm-to-cool swing is fairly common in October. The first strong cold front of the month often marks a seasonal turning point, bringing the first real taste of fall air after a stretch of lingering warmth. As we move deeper into the month, average highs drop into the upper 60s, and the odds of hitting 80 become much lower.

Looking Ahead

If you’ve enjoyed these mild afternoons, take advantage while you can. By late week, you’ll likely be reaching for a jacket in the mornings and evenings as true fall weather settles in.
