October’s Arrival: What the First Full Month of Fall Means for Rowan County’s Weather

Thursday, October 2, 2025 - 8:10am

October has officially arrived, and with it comes the first full month of fall across Rowan County. While September gave us a taste of cooler mornings and a few breezy afternoons, October is when the seasonal shift really sets in.

Average October Weather in Rowan County

  • High Temperatures: Typically start in the upper 70s and finish the month in the upper 60s.

  • Low Temperatures: Begin in the upper 50s and drop to the mid-to-upper 40s by Halloween.

  • Rainfall: Rowan County usually sees around 3–4 inches of rain during October, often tied to passing cold fronts or the occasional influence from the tropics.

Frost Potential

The first frost of the season can sometimes occur late in October, especially in our cooler valley spots and rural areas outside of town. While most years Rowan County’s first frost waits until November, it’s not unusual to see patchy frost toward the end of October when skies are clear and winds go calm overnight.

Fall Colors and Outdoor Weather

October is also the month when many folks start looking to the mountains for fall color. Rowan County tends to see its best tree color late in the month into early November, but cooler nights ahead will help kick off the process. With sunny, lower-humidity afternoons, it’s one of the most comfortable times of the year to be outside.

This Year’s Outlook

We’re starting October with cooler-than-normal days thanks to high pressure nosing down from the Northeast. That will keep highs in the low 70s for the first couple of days before a gradual warm-up by the weekend. The National Weather Service outlook hints at slightly above-normal temps mid-month, but moisture from the Atlantic may sneak in at times, bringing cloudy days and spotty showers.

Takeaway for Rowan County

October is the transition month where mornings feel crisp, afternoons stay comfortable, and the first hints of real chill can sneak in by the end. Keep an extra layer handy, especially if you’re out early or late, and enjoy one of the best weather months of the year.
