NHC Update: Tropical Storm Imelda Slowly Strengthening, Eyes Turn Toward Bermuda

Monday, September 29, 2025 - 5:51am

The National Hurricane Center’s 5 a.m. update shows Tropical Storm Imelda gradually becoming better organized as it moves northward in the Atlantic. Pressure has dropped to 996 mb, and sustained winds are now near 40 knots (about 45 mph).

Current Track and Movement

Imelda is drifting north at about 7 mph along the western side of the subtropical ridge. By Tuesday, that ridge is expected to erode due to nearby Hurricane Humberto. As a result, Imelda should make an abrupt turn to the east-northeast and begin accelerating into the open Atlantic.

Forecast confidence is growing that the storm will remain well offshore of the southeastern U.S. coast. However, the system’s projected path keeps it uncomfortably close to Bermuda later this week, where watches may be issued as soon as today.

Intensity Outlook

The storm is expected to slowly strengthen in the near term thanks to warm waters and a moist environment, despite moderate wind shear. By midweek, an upper-level trough will begin pushing Imelda into extratropical transition.

Some forecast models, including the GFS and ECMWF, suggest the storm could briefly intensify as it interacts with the trough near Bermuda. There is also mention of a possible sting jet developing around this time, which could enhance wind impacts in the region.

Key Hazards

  • Tropical storm conditions: Ongoing across parts of the northwestern Bahamas.

  • Heavy rainfall: Flash flooding and mudslides possible in eastern Cuba and the Bahamas through Tuesday. Heavy rain could also bring isolated flooding along the coastal Carolinas.

  • Marine hazards: Swells from both Humberto and Imelda will create high surf and dangerous rip currents along the Florida and Georgia coasts today, spreading northward along much of the East Coast through the week.

Local Impacts for Rowan County

While Imelda will stay offshore, its influence is still being felt here at home. A stalled front combined with tropical moisture is bringing showers and a few thunderstorms across Rowan County today and tonight. Periods of heavy rainfall are possible, though totals are expected to remain modest — generally a quarter inch to half an inch in most spots.

Patchy fog could reduce visibility during the morning and overnight hours. Northeasterly winds will pick up at times, with gusts up to 20 mph on Tuesday. These are not damaging winds, but they’ll add a noticeable breeze and keep temperatures cooler than normal, with highs stuck in the low 70s.

By midweek, drier air from high pressure building down the East Coast will bring improving weather, with sunshine returning by Wednesday and cooler nights settling into the 50s.

What’s Next

Interests in Bermuda should closely monitor updates from the National Hurricane Center, as a Hurricane Watch could be issued soon. For Rowan County, the main takeaway is spotty showers through Tuesday, patchy fog, breezy northeast winds, and below-normal temperatures before sunshine returns midweek.
