SPC Outlook: “General Thunderstorm” for Rowan County Today
The Storm Prediction Center places Rowan County in the General Thunderstorm category today. That means scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible, but organized severe weather is not expected.
What to know today
-
Timing: Greatest coverage through mid-afternoon, with another round possible toward early evening.
-
Hazards: Lightning, brief downpours, and isolated gusty winds. Localized ponding is possible under heavier cells.
-
Aviation/Events: Periods of reduced visibility where downpours occur; plan for quick weather delays.
Steve Monday on today’s risk:
“A general thunderstorm outlook doesn’t mean a free pass. It means most storms should stay below severe limits, but any storm can produce dangerous lightning and a quick inch of rain. If you hear thunder, head inside.”
NHC Update: Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine Near the Bahamas
The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine near the Bahamas (5 a.m. advisory). Maximum sustained winds are near 30–35 mph, and the disturbance is expected to become a tropical storm within 12–18 hours. Guidance suggests strengthening through about 72 hours, possibly reaching hurricane intensity early next week.
Track & Uncertainty
-
Short term (through Monday): A north-northwest turn is expected, then a slower bend to the northeast/east as Hurricane Humberto passes well offshore.
-
Model spread: Many solutions keep the system offshore, but some scenarios still show a U.S. landfall in the Southeast.
-
Bottom line: Even if the center stays offshore, the system could be large enough and close enough to deliver impacts along the Southeast coast and inland.
What this could mean for Rowan County
-
Rain: Risk for heavy rain and flooding increases Monday–Tuesday, depending on the exact track and rain shield placement.
-
Wind: Breezy periods are likely; strongest winds near the coast. Current signals keep winds below tropical-storm strength in our area, but gusts could still affect outdoor plans and a few trees/limbs in saturated spots.
-
Confidence: Moderate for rain impacts; lower for wind details until the track clarifies.
Key NHC messages summarized
-
Tropical storm conditions possible in parts of the central and northwestern Bahamas (warnings in effect there).
-
Flooding rains possible this weekend across eastern Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and the Bahamas.
-
Increasing threat of heavy rainfall early next week from coastal Georgia through the Carolinas into the southern Mid-Atlantic.
-
Risk of storm surge and wind impacts near the Southeast U.S. coast as the system nears early next week.
Steve Monday on early-week impacts:
“Our main concern is soaking, potentially flooding rainfall Monday into Tuesday. A small track shift can change totals quickly, so plan for a wet start to the week and stay flexible. We’ll tighten the details as the center organizes.”
