Rainfall Outlook: What to Expect in Rowan County

Thursday, September 25, 2025 - 8:13am

An unsettled weather pattern is setting up across the Carolinas with multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected through the weekend. A combination of a stalled front, an upper-level trough, and moisture feeding in from the Atlantic will keep rain chances elevated for several days.

Rainfall Totals Through Midweek

Forecast models indicate that Rowan County could see up to 2.3 inches of rainfall through the middle of next week. Most of this rain is expected between Friday and Saturday night, when storm coverage will be the highest. Localized heavier amounts are possible where thunderstorms repeatedly track over the same areas, leading to isolated flooding concerns.

What’s Driving the Rain

  • Cold Front & Upper Trough: A front pushing into the region will act as a focus for storm development. At the same time, an upper trough to our west will help lift warm, moist air into the Carolinas, creating the ingredients for multiple rounds of showers and storms.

  • Moisture Supply: Southwest winds in the lower levels of the atmosphere are transporting deep tropical moisture into the area. This will help storms produce heavier downpours than we’ve seen in recent weeks.

  • Atlantic Systems: While the primary impacts from Hurricane Gabrielle and Tropical Storm Humberto will remain offshore, their presence in the Atlantic is helping shape the overall weather pattern. At the same time, a developing disturbance near the Bahamas (Invest 94L) is drawing additional tropical moisture northward. This influx of moisture is one of the reasons our rain chances remain higher than normal through the weekend.

Looking Ahead

Rain chances will stay elevated through Saturday night before gradually tapering off into early next week. By then, temperatures will also cool closer to seasonal averages, bringing some relief from the recent warmth. After Monday, confidence in the forecast decreases, but a few showers may still linger at times.

Bottom Line

Rowan County residents should prepare for a wet stretch of weather with periods of heavy rain, especially Friday into Saturday. While widespread flooding is not expected, isolated nuisance flooding in low-lying or poor-drainage areas cannot be ruled out. Keep an eye on updates as forecast details become clearer in the coming days.
