NHC Watching Two Disturbances in the Atlantic

Wednesday, September 17, 2025 - 6:34am

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to monitor two systems in the Atlantic.

Central Tropical Atlantic (Invest AL92):
A low pressure system located about midway between the Windward Islands and the Cabo Verde Islands is gradually becoming better organized. Shower and thunderstorm activity has increased, and if these trends continue, this system could become a tropical depression later today. It is moving northwest at 10 to 15 mph across the central tropical and subtropical Atlantic. Formation chances are high — 90 percent within 48 hours and 90 percent over the next 7 days. Gale warnings are already in effect for parts of the Atlantic.

Eastern Tropical Atlantic:
A tropical wave located a couple of hundred miles east-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands is producing disorganized showers and storms. Environmental conditions are only marginally favorable, so any development should be slow to occur as it moves westward at 15 to 20 mph. Regardless of development, this system will likely bring periods of heavy rain to the Cabo Verde Islands today and Thursday. Chances of development are 10 percent in 48 hours and 20 percent in 7 days.

Key Point for Rowan County:
Neither system poses any immediate threat to the Carolinas or the United States. Rowan County Weather will continue to monitor developments in the Atlantic as the busy part of hurricane season continues.
