Cooler Than Normal – Why September is Starting Off Below Average

Tuesday, September 9, 2025 - 6:05am

Rowan County is easing into September under the influence of a strong area of high pressure anchored to the north and east. That setup is steering a persistent northeast wind into the Carolinas, keeping conditions cooler and drier than we normally expect for this time of year.

Temperatures Running Behind Schedule

Through mid-week, high temperatures are forecast to top out in the mid to upper 70s across Rowan County. That’s nearly 5 to 10 degrees below the early-September average, which typically runs in the low to mid-80s. Overnight lows are also cooler, dipping into the mid-50s for several nights — giving the air an early fall feel.

Why the Cool Down?

The primary driver is the position of the high pressure system. With its core to our northeast, air is flowing in from the Atlantic and New England regions. This flow suppresses warmer southern air from reaching the Piedmont, while also keeping conditions relatively dry. Moisture levels have dropped into the 40s for dewpoints, which contributes to clear skies and crisp mornings.

How Long Will It Last?

Below-average temperatures will continue through Thursday before slowly moderating closer to seasonal norms by Friday and into the weekend. Even then, the pattern looks to stay dry, with no rain expected locally until at least early next week.

What This Means for You

  • Expect comfortable afternoons for outdoor activities, but cooler mornings that may call for a light jacket.

  • Lawns and gardens will begin to dry out after several rain-free days, so watering may become necessary.

  • For sports and community events, conditions will be ideal with plenty of sunshine and low humidity.

Rowan County is starting September with weather that feels more like late fall than late summer — a reminder that seasonal transitions can bring a few surprises.
