While widespread severe weather is not expected, some storms could bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning.
Timing
Forecast models indicate the best chances for rain and thunderstorms will arrive after 6 PM as the cold front sweeps through the Piedmont. Scattered showers and storms are possible ahead of this, but the most organized activity is expected this evening into the overnight hours.
Threats
-
Damaging wind gusts: Strongest storms could produce brief wind damage.
-
Heavy rainfall: Localized downpours could reduce visibility and create ponding on roads.
-
Lightning: Any thunderstorm has the potential for frequent lightning.
Looking Ahead
Cooler and drier air will arrive behind the front, making Sunday and much of next week feel more like early fall. Highs will fall back into the mid-70s with overnight lows dipping into the 50s by early next week.
