Early Fall Preview: How Long Will the Cool, Dry Weather Last?

Tuesday, August 26, 2025 - 8:04am

Rowan County residents are getting an early taste of fall this week. A strong area of high pressure has settled across the Carolinas, bringing a stretch of cooler, drier weather that feels more like late September than late August.

What’s Behind the Change

High pressure has locked in over the region, pulling down a cooler and less humid airmass. Afternoon highs are running 5–10 degrees below seasonal averages, and dewpoints in the 50s are making the air feel crisp and comfortable. Overnight lows are also dipping well below normal, with widespread 50s across the Piedmont and even some 40s in the mountains.

How Long It Will Last

This pattern is expected to hold through much of the week. Sunshine will dominate the forecast, with highs in the upper 70s to near 80 and pleasant evenings. By the weekend, the high pressure system will begin to weaken slightly, but there are no signs of a quick return to summer heat. Temperatures will stay near or just below normal into early next week.

What It Means for Rowan County

Late August usually brings lingering humidity and highs in the upper 80s, so this stretch of weather is a welcome break. It is not quite time to pack away summer gear, but it does serve as a reminder that the seasons are changing. With meteorological fall beginning September 1, this pattern offers a preview of what’s to come.
