August Thunderstorm Patterns in Rowan County

Sunday, August 10, 2025 - 8:47am

After a stretch of cooler and cloudier days, a more typical late-summer weather pattern is returning to Rowan County. That means we can expect the daily risk of scattered afternoon thunderstorms to make a comeback this week.

Today, the Storm Prediction Center places our area under a general thunderstorm risk. This is a low-level category, meaning storms are possible but widespread severe weather is not expected. The most likely impacts from any storms today will be brief heavy rain, occasional lightning, and gusty winds.

These August storm setups often follow a familiar routine: mornings start with warm, humid air and some patchy fog, followed by partly sunny skies. As the day heats up, instability builds, and any small disturbance or wind shift can trigger storms to pop up. Because of this, forecasts can change quickly, and radar updates become more important in the afternoon.

Through midweek, temperatures will slowly warm toward the mid-to-upper 80s, and storm chances will hover in the 30–60 percent range depending on the day. Storm coverage tends to be hit-or-miss, so some areas may see multiple downpours while others stay mostly dry.

The takeaway: Keep an eye on the forecast each afternoon and be prepared to adjust outdoor plans quickly.
