A Cool, Damp Week Ahead: What Rowan County Can Expect Day by Day

Monday, August 4, 2025 - 8:11am

Rowan County is heading into a stretch of weather more typical of early fall than early August. Cold air damming is firmly in place across the region, keeping high temperatures well below normal and allowing daily rounds of showers to persist. Here's a breakdown of what to expect through the end of the workweek.

Monday
After some early patchy fog, skies will remain partly sunny with a high near 81. A few showers may develop in the evening, with overnight rain chances increasing to 40 percent. Lows will dip to around 65 degrees.

Tuesday
Rain becomes more widespread, with a 40 percent chance of showers through the day and night. Expect mostly cloudy skies and cooler air, with a high near 75 and lows near 64. Some locally heavy downpours are possible, though widespread flooding is not expected.

Wednesday
Temperatures inch up slightly, but clouds and scattered showers remain. A high near 78 is forecast, with storm chances increasing during the afternoon and evening. The chance of precipitation stands at 50 percent for both day and night. Overnight lows remain steady in the mid-60s.

Thursday
A mix of sun and clouds will return, though showers and a few thunderstorms remain possible after 2 p.m. Highs will climb back to the low 80s, with a 40 percent chance of precipitation during the day and into the evening hours. Lows will stay in the mid-60s.

Friday
Scattered afternoon showers and storms are possible once again, with a high near 81. The chance of rain is lower at 30 percent, but any showers that form may bring brief downpours. Friday night will remain mostly cloudy with a low near 66.

What’s Causing the Pattern?
This week’s cooler, wetter weather is being driven by a classic cold air damming setup—where cool air gets trapped against the eastern slopes of the Appalachians. A coastal low developing later this week may gradually erode this setup by the weekend, but expect unsettled conditions to persist until then.

Rowan County Weather will continue to monitor daily developments, especially any areas of locally heavy rain that could impact commutes or outdoor plans.
