The National Weather Service has issued back-to-back Heat Advisories for Rowan County and much of the region, warning of dangerously high heat index values reaching up to 108°.
-
First Advisory: In effect from noon today (Sunday) through 2:00 AM Monday
-
Second Advisory: Follows immediately from noon to 8:00 PM on Monday
These advisories cover a wide area, including portions of northeast Georgia, the North Carolina Piedmont and Foothills, and Upstate South Carolina.
What to Expect
During this advisory period, extreme heat and humidity will combine to create heat index values up to 108°, making outdoor activities potentially hazardous. The most intense heat will occur during the afternoon and early evening hours, but warm overnight lows in the mid-70s will offer little relief.
Health Impacts
These conditions significantly increase the risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending extended time outdoors or without access to air conditioning. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
-
Heavy sweating
-
Weakness or dizziness
-
Nausea
-
Headache
-
Muscle cramps
More serious conditions like heat stroke can be life-threatening and require immediate emergency care.
Safety Tips
-
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
-
Find air conditioning: Spend time indoors in a cool, air-conditioned place.
-
Avoid peak sun hours: Limit outdoor activity during the afternoon heat.
-
Check on others: Make sure elderly neighbors, young children, and pets are safe.
-
Never leave anyone in a parked car: Interior temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
If working outdoors, OSHA recommends frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning. Know the signs of heat illness and act quickly if symptoms appear.
Looking Ahead
Hot and humid conditions will persist into midweek, with daily heat indices remaining in the 105 to 109 degree range. A cold front later in the week may finally bring some relief and an increased chance of showers and storms.
