A prolonged and potentially dangerous heat wave is building across Rowan County and much of the Southeast. As high pressure strengthens over the region, temperatures will steadily climb, and conditions will become increasingly oppressive through the weekend and into next week.
What to Expect
-
Thursday: High near 91°F
-
Friday: High near 96°F, heat index up to 103°F
-
Saturday: High near 98°F, heat index 105 to 109°F
-
Sunday: High near 99°F, heat index may approach 110°F
-
Monday: High near 98°F
Afternoon humidity levels will amplify the heat, pushing heat index values into the advisory range, especially Saturday and Sunday. Conditions like these can lead to heat-related illnesses if proper precautions aren’t taken.
Heat Advisory Likely
The National Weather Service may issue a Heat Advisory for parts of the Piedmont, including Rowan County, this weekend. Heat Advisories are typically issued when the heat index is expected to reach 105°F or greater for at least two hours.
Safety Tips
-
Limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours
-
Hydrate frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty
-
Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles
-
Wear light-colored, breathable clothing
Relief?
Unfortunately, rain chances remain low for most of Rowan County. While the mountains may see scattered afternoon storms, the central Piedmont will stay mostly dry. The upper-level ridge responsible for this heat may begin to shift westward late next week, possibly allowing cooler air and higher storm chances to return.
Rowan County Weather will continue monitoring the heat and will update on any advisories or changes in the forecast.
