Hot Weekend Ahead: Tips to Stay Safe in Extreme Heat

Wednesday, July 23, 2025 - 9:07am

The heat is building across Rowan County, and by this weekend, conditions may become dangerously hot. With forecast highs climbing into the upper 90s on Saturday and Sunday—and heat index values projected to reach 105 to 108 degrees—now is the time to take precautions.

What’s Causing the Heat?

A strong ridge of high pressure is setting up across the Southeast, trapping warm air and keeping afternoon storms to a minimum. With little cloud cover and light winds, temperatures will soar. Dewpoints in the upper 60s and low 70s will make it feel even hotter than the actual air temperature.

What Is the Heat Index?

The heat index, often referred to as the "feels-like" temperature, combines air temperature and humidity. When humidity is high, the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating is reduced, which can lead to heat-related illness faster than normal.

This weekend, actual highs near 98 degrees could feel more like 105 to 108 in the afternoon hours.

Safety Tips for the Weekend

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty.

  • Limit outdoor activity: Avoid strenuous work or exercise during the hottest part of the day (typically between 2 and 6 PM).

  • Take breaks in the shade or indoors: If you must be outside, find shaded areas or air-conditioned spaces to cool off.

  • Check on others: Make sure elderly family members and neighbors are staying cool and have access to air conditioning.

  • Watch for signs of heat illness: These include dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, confusion, and headaches.

Don’t Forget About Pets

Animals can also suffer from extreme heat. Make sure they have access to shade and fresh water. Never leave pets in a vehicle, even for a short time.
