Here’s a closer look at the science behind these quick-hitting storms and how the summer heat helps fuel them.
A Recipe for Afternoon Storms
Pop-up storms are most common on warm, humid days when there is little wind to move weather systems along. Instead of large storm systems rolling through, these thunderstorms often form right over us, thanks to three key ingredients:

As the sun beats down through the late morning and early afternoon, temperatures rise rapidly. This heating causes the air near the ground to become unstable and begin rising.
2. Moisture:
Dew points in the 70s, like we’re seeing today, indicate plenty of moisture in the air. As warm air rises, it carries this moisture upward, where it can condense into clouds.
3. Instability:
When warm, moist air near the ground rises into cooler air above, it can form towering clouds called cumulonimbus—classic thunderstorm clouds.
When all of these ingredients come together, isolated thunderstorms can develop with little warning. Because the steering winds are often weak during the summer, these storms can remain nearly stationary or drift slowly, leading to brief downpours and localized impacts.
Why They’re So Hard to Pinpoint
One of the challenges in forecasting summer storms is their unpredictability. Unlike large storm systems, these pop-up storms don’t form along a well-defined front. Instead, they can spark almost anywhere that local conditions are just right—often triggered by subtle surface boundaries or even pockets of intense heating over parking lots or fields.
