The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, in effect until 11:00 PM EDT tonight. This alert is due to excessive rainfall from slow-moving thunderstorms currently impacting the area.

Advisory Details

At 8:02 PM, radar and automated rain gauges indicated that 1 to 2 inches of rain had fallen in under 30 minutes across portions of northwest Cabarrus and southwest Rowan County, with additional rainfall expected. This is producing excessive runoff and raising the risk of nuisance to minor flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

Areas of Greatest Concern

Flooding is expected or possible in:

  • Kannapolis and North Kannapolis, especially near Pine St, Tiffany Dr, and Pump Station Rd near Kannapolis Lake and the headwaters of Irish Buffalo Creek

  • Landis, particularly near N Meriah St and Mt Moriah Church Rd in the headwaters of Grants Creek

  • China Grove and Enochville

Hazards

  • Ponding on roadways, parking lots, golf courses, and greenways

  • Inundation of low-lying farmland and boat access areas

  • Possible shallow flows over roads and isolated culvert washouts

  • Some low-water crossings may become temporarily impassable

Additional Rainfall Possible

Another 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall over the affected area within the next hour. If rainfall totals exceed 2 to 3 inches, more significant flooding may develop and a Flash Flood Warning could be issued.

What To Do

  • Do not drive across flooded roads. Turn around, don’t drown.

  • Monitor creeks, streams, and drainage areas for rapid rises.

  • Be prepared to move to higher ground if flooding develops.

  • If you live near a stream or flood-prone zone, have a plan in place and act quickly if needed.
