The ongoing heat wave across the Western Carolinas and Northeast Georgia will hit another peak on Wednesday, June 25, with dangerously high temperatures and heat indices combining with the threat for strong to severe storms in the afternoon and evening hours.
Heat Advisory Remains in Effect
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg continues to highlight the oppressive heat expected Wednesday afternoon. Widespread heat indices above 105°F are forecast, with some locations possibly reaching as high as 109°F. These levels of heat are extremely dangerous, especially for individuals without access to air conditioning or proper hydration.
Severe Storms Possible
Adding to the concern, scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop by mid-to-late afternoon. The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts, though large hail cannot be ruled out. The Storm Prediction Center currently places much of the region under a Level 2 out of 5 – Slight Risk for severe weather.
Key Forecast Details
-
Timing: Storms could initiate after 2 PM and continue into the evening hours.
-
Hazards: Damaging wind gusts (primary threat), hail (secondary), frequent lightning, and very heavy rainfall.
-
Heat Impacts: Prolonged exposure could lead to heat-related illnesses or stress on sensitive individuals and infrastructure (e.g., power systems).
Forecast Challenges
Forecasters caution that storm development could limit high heat potential in some areas. Still, heat indices will remain in the danger zone regardless, and storm intensity could be amplified by the hot and humid conditions.
What You Should Do
-
Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
-
Stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned environments, and check on neighbors—especially the elderly.
-
Monitor the forecast and have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings Wednesday afternoon and evening.
