Heat Wave Continues: Dangerous Heat and Humidity Tuesday and Wednesday

Monday, June 23, 2025 - 4:13pm

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Heat Advisory for Rowan County and much of the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia as heat index values are expected to exceed 105 degrees both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

What to Expect

  • Timing: The worst of the heat is expected between 12 PM and 6 PM on both Tuesday, June 24, and Wednesday, June 25.

  • Heat Index: Values could rise as high as 108°F, creating conditions where heat-related illness becomes likely with prolonged exposure or activity.

  • Duration: The advisory is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening.

Who Is at Risk

This level of heat is dangerous for:

  • Anyone without access to air conditioning or sufficient water

  • Children and elderly individuals

  • Outdoor workers, athletes, and pets

  • People with pre-existing health conditions, including respiratory or cardiovascular issues

The advisory notes that heat can also strain infrastructure, cause stress on local health systems, and reduce the reliability of power systems during peak demand hours.

Forecast Challenges Ahead

While temperatures will remain high, there is now increased confidence that the upper ridge fueling this heat wave will begin to break down by late Wednesday into Thursday, potentially bringing a slow but gradual return to more typical summer conditions.

There is also a growing signal for scattered daily showers and thunderstorms as early as midweek. These storms may help cool some areas temporarily, but also bring humidity and storm-related hazards like downbursts or localized flooding.

Next NWS Briefing

The next update from the National Weather Service is scheduled for 8:00 AM Tuesday, June 24. Rowan County Weather will continue to monitor all forecast trends and provide localized updates as needed.

Heat Safety Reminders

  • Stay indoors during peak heat hours

  • Drink water frequently, even if not thirsty

  • Take breaks in air conditioning if working outside

  • Never leave children or pets in cars

  • Check on neighbors and vulnerable individuals

Rowan County Weather will continue to provide daily updates on this ongoing heat wave and any future advisories that may follow.
