With summer heat building across Rowan County, many are asking: Will we hit Heat Advisory levels next week?

The short answer: Probably not — but we'll get very close.

What Is a Heat Advisory?

The National Weather Service issues a Heat Advisory when the heat index (a combination of temperature and humidity) is forecast to reach 105°F or higher for at least two hours.

What We're Expecting

Here’s a look at projected heat index values over the coming days:

• Sunday: 96–98°F

• Monday: 98–101°F

• Tuesday & Wednesday: 99–103°F

While these values fall just below advisory criteria, the combination of high humidity and air temperatures in the mid to upper 90s will make it feel oppressive — especially during the afternoon and early evening hours.

What's Driving the Heat?

A stubborn high-pressure ridge is parked over the southeastern U.S., limiting cloud cover and suppressing rain chances. This allows temperatures to climb day after day, with little nighttime relief due to muggy conditions.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Even without an official advisory, this level of heat can be dangerous, especially for:
