Rowan County's First Heat Wave of 2025: What to Know This Week

Saturday, June 21, 2025 - 7:08am

By Rowan County Weather | June 21, 2025

The hottest stretch of the year so far is settling in across Rowan County. Temperatures will climb steadily each day through midweek, with highs pushing into the mid-90s and heat index values nearing the triple digits — marking the first true heat wave of 2025.

What Defines a Heat Wave?

In our region, a heat wave typically means three or more consecutive days of temperatures at or above 90°. Starting today, we’re expecting highs near or above 90° every day through at least Thursday — meeting that definition and then some.

  • Saturday: High near 89°

  • Sunday: High near 91°

  • Monday: High near 94°

  • Tuesday & Wednesday: Highs near 96°, with heat indices close to 100°

Will We Reach Heat Advisory Levels?

Not quite — at least not yet. A Heat Advisory is issued when heat index values are expected to reach 105° or higher. Current projections suggest we’ll top out between 97–101°, just below advisory thresholds. But even without an official advisory, this heat will be dangerous for prolonged outdoor activity.

Why It’s So Hot Right Now

An upper-level high-pressure ridge is building over the southeastern U.S., trapping warm air and blocking cloud cover and rain. This allows temperatures to rise steadily each day, while light winds provide little relief.

Staying Safe in the Heat

  • Hydrate early and often — water is best.

  • Avoid peak heat hours (1–5 PM) if working or exercising outdoors.

  • Never leave children or pets in cars, even for a few minutes.

  • Check on neighbors, especially elderly or those without A/C.

What About Rain?

There’s a slight chance for isolated showers or storms each afternoon, especially near the mountains, but most of Rowan County will remain dry through midweek.

Bottom Line:
This is our first major bout of summer heat — and while not extreme, it deserves respect. Keep cool, stay informed, and we’ll keep you updated as the week goes on.
