Summer officially begins today, and the weather will waste no time reminding us. While today and Saturday will still feel manageable, heat and humidity build fast by Sunday—pushing “feels-like” temperatures into the upper 90s and possibly low 100s next week.
For Rowan County families with weekend plans outdoors, it’s a good time to review simple but important ways to stay safe and cool.
What to Expect
-
Saturday: Sunny and warm, with highs near 90°.
-
Sunday: Hot and humid, with highs near 92° and heat index values climbing into the upper 90s.
-
Next Week: Temperatures surge into the mid to upper 90s by Monday and Tuesday, with limited relief overnight.
Heat Safety Tips for Families
1. Hydrate Before You Feel Thirsty
Make water a priority throughout the day—especially for children and seniors. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks if you’ll be outdoors long.
2. Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day
Try to plan outdoor activities before 11 a.m. or after 6 p.m. when the sun is lower and heat isn’t as intense.
3. Dress for the Weather
Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing helps your body cool more efficiently. Hats and sunglasses help, too.
4. Know the Signs of Heat Illness
Watch for dizziness, nausea, headaches, muscle cramps, and heavy sweating. These are early signs of heat exhaustion and should not be ignored.
“This is the kind of weekend where just a few extra precautions can make a big difference,” said Steve Monday, Chief Forecaster for Rowan County Weather. “The heat builds quickly, and when humidity rises, even a short time outdoors can become dangerous—especially for kids and seniors.”
5. Never Leave Children or Pets in a Vehicle
Even with the windows cracked, interior temps can rise over 110 degrees within minutes. Always check the back seat and remind others to do the same.
6. Keep Pets Safe Too
If it’s too hot for your hand on the pavement, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Provide shade, water, and indoor time.
Community Resources
Rowan County Emergency Management and local municipalities offer cooling centers during extreme heat events. If needed, updates will be posted on official channels and Rowan County Weather platforms.
Final Word
The weekend may start mild, but summer’s heat will come fast. By Monday and Tuesday, we’ll be in full-on heatwave territory. Stay weather-aware, listen to your body, and take care of one another.
Let’s make safety just as much a part of summer plans as sunscreen and cookouts.
