Get ready for rising temperatures and a wave of summer heat across Rowan County. After several days of muggy afternoons and scattered storms, the region is about to shift toward hotter and drier conditions—especially heading into the weekend and early next week.
What’s Ahead This Week
Temperatures will gradually climb each day, with highs reaching into the upper 80s to mid-90s by the weekend. While typical June humidity will remain in place through Thursday, a cold front Friday will briefly dry the air out—but temperatures will continue to climb.
-
Tuesday: Partly sunny with a high near 89. Afternoon storms possible (30 percent chance).
-
Wednesday (Juneteenth Eve): Sunny, high near 90. Slightly lower storm chances.
-
Thursday (Juneteenth): Hot and sunny with highs near 91, and a 30 to 40 percent chance of late-day storms.
-
Friday: Mostly sunny and less humid, high near 89.
-
Saturday–Monday: The heat wave sets in with highs in the low to mid-90s, possibly touching 94 by Monday.
First Heat Wave of the Season
By Sunday and Monday, Rowan County could experience its first heat wave of the season, with multiple days of highs near or above 93 and heat index values approaching 100, particularly southeast of I-85.
While dewpoints this weekend will be lower (especially on Friday and Saturday), the hot sun and dry air could increase risk for heat-related illnesses if proper precautions aren’t taken.
This will likely be the most widespread stretch of 90s we've seen so far in 2025.
Storm Chances Remain—but Will Be Hit or Miss
Scattered thunderstorms will still be possible each afternoon through Thursday, but by Friday, drier air filters in. A few pop-ups may still form over the weekend, but overall, rain chances drop, especially as upper-level high pressure builds overhead.
That said, any storm that does form could still produce:
-
Localized downpours
-
Gusty winds
-
Frequent lightning
What to Watch For
-
Heat impacts begin Sunday into Monday
-
Stay hydrated
-
Take breaks if working outdoors
-
Never leave people or pets in a vehicle
-
-
Reduced rain chances starting Friday
-
Possible air quality concerns over the weekend
-
Patchy fog and low stratus possible in the mornings, especially in areas that saw recent rainfall
A Word from the Forecaster
"This is our first real stretch of sustained summer heat, and it's important that Rowan County residents take care of themselves—stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during peak afternoon heat, and check in on vulnerable neighbors," said Steve Monday, Chief Forecaster at Rowan County Weather. "We're prepared to work closely with Rowan County Emergency Management as this pattern unfolds to ensure our communities are informed and safe throughout the heat wave."
Final Word
While Rowan County has handled some muggy afternoons and stormy evenings recently, the pattern is shifting—bringing drier skies and hotter temperatures. This is the time to plan accordingly, especially for outdoor activities around Father’s Day weekend and early next week.
