Why Only Part of Rowan County Is Under a Marginal Risk Today

Sunday, June 15, 2025 - 7:24am

As storms once again enter the forecast for this afternoon and evening, you may have noticed that today’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) Outlook splits Rowan County into two risk zones. Eastern portions of the county are under a Level 1 – Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms, while the western half remains in a general thunderstorm risk. So what does that mean—and why the divide?

Where the Line Falls

According to the SPC’s Day 1 Outlook, areas like Salisbury, Spencer, Granite Quarry, Rockwell, Faith, and East Spencer are included in the marginal risk zone. Meanwhile, places like Cleveland, Mooresville, China Grove, and Landis remain in the general thunderstorm area.

This boundary isn’t arbitrary—it's based on atmospheric factors like instability, moisture, and wind shear, all of which help forecasters estimate the potential for damaging winds, hail, or even isolated tornadoes.

What a Marginal Risk Means

A Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) signals that isolated severe storms are possible, but not widespread. These storms might bring:

  • Gusty winds

  • Small hail

  • Brief heavy rain

  • Frequent lightning

The risk is marginal, but still worth noting—especially with outdoor activities or travel planned later today.

What’s Causing Today’s Setup

Rowan County sits in a warm, humid air mass that’s favorable for scattered pop-up thunderstorms. The SPC has outlined the eastern half of the county because conditions are slightly more favorable there for storms to become stronger. This includes:

  • Slightly higher instability (more fuel for storms)

  • Proximity to weak upper-level disturbances

  • Leftover boundaries from Saturday’s storms

Timing and Impacts

Storms are most likely between 3 PM and 9 PM today, with localized downpours and lightning as the main concerns. While widespread severe weather isn’t expected, one or two stronger cells can’t be ruled out, especially in the marginal risk zone.

Bottom Line

This split in the severe weather outlook reminds us how localized summer storms can be. If you're east of I-85 today, your storm chances—and the intensity—may be just a notch higher.
