Race Overview

For the first time in NASCAR Cup Series history, drivers will compete in an official points race outside the United States. The high-altitude, technical road course at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez will test engines, brakes, and driver stamina in ways few Cup events have before.

This marks NASCAR's return to Mexico City for the first time since 2008 (Xfinity Series), and its first Cup appearance in the country since 1958.

Key Storylines

Shane van Gisbergen on the Pole
The New Zealander starts first after clocking a 1:32.776 in qualifying. A proven road course ace, van Gisbergen won the inaugural Chicago Street Race in 2023 and is expected to contend again on the international stage.

Daniel Suárez Carries the Flag for Mexico
Fresh off a dramatic win in Saturday’s Xfinity race, Suárez looks to carry momentum into the Cup main event. He is one of the few Mexican drivers in NASCAR’s top series and a fan favorite in his home country.

Road Course Specialists in the Spotlight
Tyler Reddick, Christopher Bell, William Byron, and Michael McDowell are all strong on road circuits and could be contenders Sunday. Each has at least one road course win and experience managing the complexities of this style of racing.

Katherine Legge Makes Cup Debut
Veteran road racer Katherine Legge joins the Cup field for the first time, bringing a wealth of experience and expanding diversity in the series. She will pilot a Chevrolet backed by e.l.f. Cosmetics.

Weather Watch

Forecasts suggest potential for light rain during the event, which could increase grip challenges and bring pit strategy into play. NASCAR’s wet-weather package will be ready if needed.

Looking Ahead

The Viva Mexico 250 is more than just a race—it’s a milestone. NASCAR is making a clear move toward international expansion, and this weekend is a bold step in that direction. With a road-course format, high-altitude racing, and passionate fans in the stands, Sunday’s event has all the ingredients to be a classic.
