If you're planning to fire up the grill or spend time outdoors this Father's Day, you'll want to keep an eye on the sky — afternoon and evening storms are looking increasingly likely across Rowan County.

What the Forecast Says

Sunday will start off mostly cloudy and muggy, with temperatures climbing into the mid-80s by early afternoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop after 2 PM, becoming more widespread as we head toward the evening.

Key forecast points:

  • Best chance for storms: 3 PM to 10 PM

  • Thunderstorms likely: Rain chance sits at 80 percent

  • High temperature: Near 86 degrees

  • Rainfall amounts: Up to a quarter inch or more in stronger cells

  • Severe weather: Not expected — but downpours and lightning are possible

So… Will It Rain on Your Plans?

If you're celebrating outdoors, aim for early in the day. The atmosphere will become increasingly unstable after lunch, giving storms the fuel they need to form and spread. Backyard barbecues or park outings should wrap up by early afternoon to avoid the soggy risk.

Even if storms don’t hit your exact location, you’ll feel the humidity — so stay hydrated and be lightning-aware.

Looking Ahead

The unsettled pattern continues into Monday and Tuesday with daily storm chances and slowly climbing temperatures. By midweek, we could see highs near 90 degrees, with more classic summertime pop-up storm behavior.

Reminder for Dad: Stay safe, stay dry, and maybe keep a movie or board game ready just in case the weather cuts things short.
