Strong Thunderstorm Approaching Northwestern Rowan County Saturday Evening

A strong thunderstorm currently moving through portions of Iredell and Catawba counties is expected to reach parts of northwestern Rowan County before 9:15 PM this evening. As of 8:41 PM, Doppler radar indicated the storm was located 7 miles southwest of Statesville, moving east at 25 mph.

Storm Hazards:

  • Wind Gusts: Up to 40 mph

  • Hail: Pea-sized

  • Rain: Heavy downpours capable of localized flooding

Areas That May Be Impacted:

  • Rowan County: Mount Ulla, Cleveland

  • Iredell County: Statesville, Troutman, Mooresville

  • Catawba County: Catawba, Lookout Shoals Lake

  • Nearby Lakes: Lake Norman, Lake Norman State Park, Doolie

The strongest activity is currently west of Rowan County, but will approach the northwestern portion of the county shortly. While not severe at this time, gusty winds could knock down small limbs and unsecured objects. Torrential rain may lead to minor flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

What You Should Do:

  • If outdoors, seek shelter indoors

  • Avoid flooded roadways — never drive through standing water

  • Secure loose outdoor items that could blow around

This storm is part of a larger pattern bringing daily rounds of storms across the region. Another round is expected Sunday afternoon and evening.
