The Storm Prediction Center has placed Rowan County under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather today. While that may sound minor, it still means we need to keep an eye on the radar as we head through the afternoon and evening.
Timing
Scattered showers or thunderstorms may begin developing after 5 PM. The best chance for any stronger storms will be during the late afternoon and early evening hours.
What to Expect
Today’s storms will be isolated, but those that do form could bring:
-
Gusty winds
-
Small hail
-
Brief heavy downpours
These are typical summer-style storms—not widespread or long-lasting, but capable of causing localized issues, especially if one passes directly over your area.
Why It's Happening
We’re seeing a mix of:
-
Warm temperatures in the mid to upper 70s
-
Dewpoints around 70 degrees
-
Modest upper-level support from a weak low and mid-level impulse
This creates enough instability—around 1500 J/kg of CAPE—for storms to grow. Winds changing direction with height (known as veering) may help organize some of these storms into multicell clusters, which increases the potential for stronger wind gusts and hail.
Local Impact
The Marginal Risk means isolated severe storms are possible, but widespread severe weather is not expected. Many of us may not see any storms at all—but those who do could experience briefly intense weather.
I’ll be tracking conditions throughout the day and evening. Keep checking back for radar updates and storm alerts as needed.
Stay weather-aware today—especially if you have outdoor plans after 5 PM.
