The National Weather Service has placed Rowan County under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather today, meaning scattered severe thunderstorms are possible late this afternoon into tonight.

Timing

The greatest risk for severe storms locally will be from 6:00 PM through midnight. A few showers or isolated thunderstorms could develop earlier, but the main concern is with a more organized complex of storms expected to approach from the west.

What to Expect

  • Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat. Gusts from any strong storms could down trees or power lines.

  • An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, especially if individual cells form ahead of the main complex.

  • Heavy downpours and frequent lightning are also likely with stronger storms.

What’s Causing This Setup?

An organized complex of thunderstorms is expected to develop over western Tennessee and northern Mississippi, then move east toward northern Alabama and Georgia. If this system holds together as expected, it could reach parts of the Carolinas this evening—including Rowan County.

“When we talk about an ‘organized complex’ of storms, we’re referring to a group of thunderstorms that work together as a system,” said Steve Monday, Chief Forecaster at Rowan County Weather. “Instead of scattered pop-ups, these storms often form a line or cluster that can cover a large area, move efficiently, and bring more widespread impacts like damaging winds.”

While models differ on how widespread or intense the storms will be by the time they arrive here, the potential exists for pockets of severe wind damage—especially in areas along and south of I-85.
