Stronger Storm Threat Saturday: What Rowan County Needs to Know
The weather pattern over Rowan County is turning more active, with a growing risk for severe storms this weekend. While today's storm threat remains isolated, Saturday brings a higher chance of strong to severe thunderstorms across the region.
Friday: Isolated Storms Possible Late
Friday’s risk is categorized by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) as a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for parts of the western Piedmont, including areas just southwest of Rowan County. Storms today are expected to be widely scattered, with the most likely timeframe for activity between 4 PM and 10 PM. Any stronger cell could produce gusty winds and small hail, but overall coverage remains limited.
Saturday: Slight Risk with Better Storm Coverage
Saturday’s setup brings a more organized and potentially more impactful storm threat. The SPC has upgraded much of the Carolinas, including Rowan County, to a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather. Storms are likely to develop during the late afternoon and evening hours, with peak timing between 3 PM and 8 PM.
What to Expect:
-
Damaging wind gusts: The primary hazard, especially with stronger storm clusters.
-
Isolated hail: A few storms may produce hail, mainly during the early stages of development.
-
Heavy downpours and lightning: Localized flooding is possible in poor drainage areas.
Why the Risk is Higher Saturday
Saturday’s atmosphere will feature higher moisture levels, better daytime heating, and more favorable wind shear compared to Friday. These ingredients combine to support stronger updrafts and longer-lived storm cells, particularly in areas where sunshine breaks through during the day.
