Calm Before the Storm? What This Week’s Low Rain Chances Could Mean

Sunday, May 18, 2025 - 8:33am

After a sunny and warm weekend across Rowan County, the workweek kicks off with more tranquil weather. Highs in the low to mid-80s and mostly sunny skies will dominate both Sunday and Monday, giving the region a short stretch of what feels like picture-perfect spring weather.

But don’t let the calm conditions fool you.

Beginning Tuesday afternoon, moisture begins to increase from the south and west, introducing a small chance (20%) of showers after 2 p.m. The more notable change comes Tuesday night into Wednesday, when rain chances climb to 50%. Forecast models show an uptick in instability and moisture levels that could support thunderstorms during this period, including some potentially strong storms.

The National Weather Service has not yet issued any alerts, but timing and storm severity will need to be watched closely. Confidence is highest in scattered storm development Tuesday night and lingering activity into Wednesday afternoon.

As of now, flooding is not expected to be a major concern. However, localized downpours, gusty winds, and lightning could all be in play midweek.

Following the rain chances, a cold front will slide through, helping temperatures dip into the low 70s by Thursday. That cooldown, paired with clearer skies, should make the latter part of the week feel more like early spring than late May.
