If you were out early this morning, you may have noticed thick patches of fog settling over parts of Rowan County. Some areas, especially near lakes, rivers, and low-lying ground, reported visibility below half a mile. While the fog cleared by mid-morning, it left many wondering: why does this happen, and how can you plan for it?

What Causes Fog?

Fog forms when the air near the ground cools enough for water vapor to condense into tiny droplets. This often happens overnight when skies are clear and winds are calm — conditions that allow the surface to radiate heat and cool rapidly. Add in moisture from nearby rivers, lakes, or saturated soil, and the setup is ideal.

In today’s case, overnight lows dipped into the upper 60s with calm winds, creating prime fog-making conditions.

Where It Forms in Rowan County

Fog isn’t evenly spread. In Rowan County, the most common trouble spots include:

  • Areas near High Rock Lake and the Yadkin River

  • Low-lying valleys and farmland east of Salisbury

  • Along U.S. 29, I-85, and NC 152 during pre-dawn hours

These locations tend to trap cooler air, especially on still, humid mornings.

When to Expect It

Fog is most likely from late fall through early spring, but it can still form during late spring and summer — especially when humidity is high after evening rainfall or when morning temperatures are close to the dew point.

Common fog times:

  • Midnight to 9 a.m.

  • Clear, calm nights

  • After rainy evenings with quick clearing overnight

Driving Tips in Fog

If you're on the road during foggy conditions:

  • Use low-beam headlights, not brights

  • Reduce your speed

  • Watch for rapidly changing visibility, especially in rural areas
