The Storm Prediction Center has placed Rowan County and much of the Carolinas under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather today. But what does that actually mean for our area?
Let’s break it down.
What Is a Marginal Risk?
A Marginal Risk is the lowest level on the SPC’s five-tier scale for severe weather. It means isolated severe storms are possible, but widespread or long-lasting severe weather is not expected. Most of today’s storms will be garden-variety thunderstorms, but a few could briefly turn strong to severe.
Today’s Threats
Rowan County sits on the northern edge of the risk zone. The greatest concerns lie to our south and east, closer to the South Carolina coastal plain. However, here’s what we’re watching locally:
-
Damaging wind gusts: Any stronger storm that develops could produce wind gusts between 40–60 mph.
-
Brief, spin-up tornado: There is a low-end chance for a quick tornado in eastern South Carolina or southern North Carolina, especially near the coastal plain.
-
Heavy downpours: Periods of moderate to heavy rain may develop with any storm, though flooding is not expected.
Timing for Rowan County
Storm activity is expected to become more likely after 3 PM and may continue through the evening hours. A few thunderstorms could linger into the early overnight period, tapering off before sunrise Wednesday.
What Should You Do?
This is not a “take cover” type of day, but it is one where it’s smart to:
-
Have multiple ways to receive warnings (weather radio, app notifications, local alerts)
-
Bring in or secure any lightweight outdoor items this afternoon
-
Be ready for sudden downpours if you're on the road later today
Final Word
While Rowan County is not in the bullseye for severe weather, we are close enough to warrant extra attention. We’ll be watching radar trends throughout the day and will provide updates if anything changes.
