By Rowan County Weather

May marks a transition season for Rowan County, as spring begins to give way to early hints of summer. From rising temperatures to ramping up rain chances, here’s a closer look at what you can expect locally this month.

Temperature Trends
Historically, Rowan County starts May with average highs in the low 70s and ends the month flirting with 80–85°. Overnight lows gradually rise from the low 50s into the 60s by Memorial Day.

This year, the month is already starting cooler than average — but don’t get too comfortable. Long-range models suggest a warmer trend mid-to-late May, with the first stretch of 85°+ days likely before the month is out.

Rainfall Patterns
May is typically one of the wetter months for the area, averaging around 4–4.5 inches of rain. That precipitation often comes in the form of afternoon thunderstorms and scattered frontal systems.

So far, early May has started on the drier side, but patterns are shifting. A more active setup is expected by midweek and again around May 12–14, potentially bringing multiple rounds of rain and storms.

Severe Weather Risk
May is second only to April for severe weather potential in Rowan County. While we don’t often see widespread outbreaks, scattered severe storms with hail, strong winds, and lightning are possible — especially later in the month.

We’ll continue to monitor any system with the potential to bring strong storms and keep you updated with advance notice.
