Rowan County Under Slight Risk: What Today’s Storm Outlook Really Means

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Rowan County under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms today. While this isn’t the highest alert level, it does mean that the ingredients are in place for a few strong to severe storms to develop, especially this evening.

What to Expect Today:

Storm activity will increase later this afternoon, with the greatest chances for stronger storms between 4 PM and 10 PM. These storms are moving in from the west, associated with a larger system that’s already produced severe weather across Alabama and Georgia.

As this line moves eastward, it may organize into clusters or broken lines capable of producing:

• Gusty to damaging winds (40–60 mph)

• Heavy downpours

• Occasional lightning

• A very low but non-zero risk of hail or a brief spin-up

Why It’s a “Slight Risk”:

A Slight Risk doesn’t mean widespread severe weather is expected—it means a few storms could become severe. In Rowan County, that might translate to isolated damage reports or storm-related power outages, especially in the evening hours.

After Dark:

Once the sun sets, we’ll begin to lose the daytime heating that fuels these storms. However, models suggest that at least a localized severe threat could persist through late evening, especially if some cells remain organized. We’ll also be watching for patchy fog to develop closer to sunrise Sunday.
