When South Rowan took the field this week for the SPC Softball Tournament, it wasn’t just another game for senior Lexie Ritchie — it was a moment years in the making.
Lexie is South’s starting second baseman and played a key role all season long, including in this week’s SPC semifinal matchup against West Rowan. While the Raiders came up short in that game, it doesn’t take away from the incredible impact Lexie has had on this program — or the legacy she leaves behind.
Back in 2019, Lexie was part of something truly special — the Rowan County 12U Little League Softball team that won the Little League Softball World Series Championship. That team was packed with talent and heart, and Lexie made her mark as they went undefeated and beat Louisiana 4-1 in the championship game in Portland, Oregon.
What makes Lexie even more special to us is the bond we’ve shared for a long time. My wife Amy taught her in both 2nd and 5th grade, and we’ve known her family for years. That connection goes beyond just school or sports — they’re practically family to us.
Lexie comes from a family full of heart, service, and strength. Her dad, Bryan, is a retired Kannapolis Police Officer who served his community for years. Her mom, Mandy, owns and operates a local hair salon, where her warmth and care shine through her work. Her sister Kelcie is a nurse — a path Lexie will soon follow — and her oldest sister Mallory has no doubt been a steady influence and role model, helping shape her younger sisters through the years. The bond between the Ritchie girls is something truly special.
Another thing that’s always stood out about Lexie is her love for animals. It’s not something tied to her future career — it’s just part of who she is. That compassion, whether on the field or off, shows up in everything she does.
Lexie plans to attend nursing school after graduation and pursue a career as a trauma ICU nurse. That goal speaks volumes about her character — her ability to stay calm under pressure, her drive to help others, and her heart for service.
Watching Lexie grow into the player and person she is today has been a joy. She’s dependable, focused, and leads by example in everything she does. She’s heading to Chowan University to continue both her academic and athletic journey, and I have no doubt she’ll thrive in both.
As she gets ready to graduate and start this next chapter, I just wanted to take a moment to say how proud we are of her — not just for what she’s accomplished on the field, but for the amazing young woman she’s become.
Congratulations, Lexie. We’re all cheering for you.
