Rockingham Returns: What NASCAR’s Comeback Means for North Carolina

Thursday, April 17, 2025 - 8:56am

For the first time in more than a decade, the roar of NASCAR engines will echo across Rockingham Speedway as the NASCAR Xfinity and CRAFTSMAN Truck Series make their long-awaited return to “The Rock” this weekend.

A cornerstone of North Carolina motorsports history, Rockingham Speedway hosted NASCAR Cup Series races from 1965 through 2004 and was once a favorite for fans and drivers alike. Known for its unique abrasive surface and tight racing, the track stood as a gritty test of driver skill. Now, with a fresh repave and new energy behind it, Rockingham is ready to reclaim its place on the racing calendar.

The Xfinity Series will headline Saturday’s action with the North Carolina Education Lottery 250 presented by Black’s Tire, while Friday’s Black’s Tire 200 will showcase the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. Both races mark a new chapter in the track’s storied history.

The fanfare is already in full swing. Local events like ThunderFest in downtown Rockingham, autograph sessions, and appearances by racing legends Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader have helped build anticipation for a weekend filled with nostalgia and new memories.

“This weekend brings back so many memories for longtime race fans,” said Steve Monday of RCW Sports. “Rockingham is one of those tracks that has a soul—there’s something special about seeing cars on that surface again. But if we want this to be more than a one-off, it’s crucial for fans to show up and support it. That’s what will ensure The Rock stays on the NASCAR schedule.”

As NASCAR continues to embrace both innovation and its roots, Rockingham’s return stands as a tribute to the sport’s deep ties to North Carolina. With tickets selling fast and the buzz building, all eyes will be on Richmond County this weekend to see if The Rock can once again become a permanent fixture in stock car racing.
