La Niña Ends – What That Means for Rowan County’s Weather

Thursday, April 10, 2025 - 9:36am

The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has announced that La Niña has officially ended. The Pacific Ocean is now in what's called an ENSO-neutral phase—basically, this means ocean temperatures near the equator are close to normal, and neither La Niña nor El Niño is in control.

What Just Happened?

La Niña is known for shifting weather patterns around the world, including here in the U.S. Now that it's gone, the Pacific Ocean has settled into a neutral pattern. This means we're not getting the strong push one way or the other from ocean conditions, and that can lead to more typical, mixed weather here in Rowan County.

What’s Coming Next?

Forecasters say ENSO-neutral conditions will likely stick around through the summer. There's more than a 50% chance this pattern continues through August. Looking even further ahead, there's a small chance La Niña could return later this year, but that doesn't affect our short-term outlook.

What This Means for Rowan County

For us here in Rowan County, this shift means our spring and summer weather may be more balanced and variable. Without La Niña steering the atmosphere, we could see:

  • More typical spring rainfall—good news for gardens and local agriculture.

  • A more “normal” summer start, without the early-season heat spikes sometimes seen during La Niña.

  • Increased thunderstorm activity, especially during late spring and early summer, as the atmosphere becomes more responsive to local heating and humidity.

In other words, we’re entering a season without strong global drivers shaping the weather—which often means our local patterns (like daily storms, temperature swings, and humidity levels) take center stage.

Rowan County Weather will keep a close eye on updates as we move through spring and into the summer months. The next big update from the Climate Prediction Center is scheduled for May 8.
