While the highest threat for severe storms is forecast for areas farther south and west, Rowan County still faces a risk of strong thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and possibly damaging wind gusts.
According to our latest forecast, conditions will be favorable for thunderstorms to strengthen during the afternoon and evening hours. Damaging winds are the primary concern, capable of downing trees and power lines and causing localized structural damage. Additionally, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Heavy rainfall is also expected to accompany these storms, with the potential for flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and poor drainage areas. The risk of “training” storms—repeated downpours over the same area—could increase overnight into early Monday, especially if instability in the atmosphere proves stronger than currently forecast.
The cold front is expected to pass through Rowan County by Monday afternoon, bringing cooler temperatures in its wake. Residents should also be aware of the potential for frost Tuesday and Wednesday nights, especially in more rural parts of the county.
Local emergency management encourages everyone to stay weather-aware, secure outdoor objects, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
