Winter Storm Update posted on Saturday 12/8/18 at 8:30am

Saturday, December 8, 2018 - 8:38am

Good morning everyone! As we move through the day today we will begin to see precipitation move into the county and over the next 3 days change often from a variety of rain, freezing rain, sleet & snow. Based on all the model data out there. The model that seems to be preforming the best compared to actual events happening with the weather is the NAM. That's where my focus will be this morning as it seems to be the most reliable source at this point.

Rain is already falling over us here in the county this morning. However, the air is so dry it is evaporating before it reaches the ground. The NAM model is suggesting that we may begin to see rain reach us here at the surface around midday today. I am in agreement with this model based on current dew points.

We will mainly see rain throughout the day and evening hours today with occasional mixing at times. That is why i have out a wintry mix in the forecast for today and this evening. As we move begin to end this Saturday and start Sunday snow will begin to move into the county and be the primary source of precipitation throughout the overnight and daytime to early evening hours on Sunday. There will be some sleet mixing in at times.

As we move into the evening hours on Sunday we will begin to see a bit of a lull in the precipitation as the first half of this system moves out.

During the early morning hours on Monday the system is expected to bring in the second half of the precipitation with rain beginning to fall in the overnight hours before  changing back over to all snow around daybreak on Monday morning.

By Monday at 1pm we will still be dealing with precipitation from this system as a mix of precipitation will still be falling around the county.

Snowfall accumulation for the county still seems to be on point for 4-9 inches around the county with ice accumulations of around a tenth to a quarter of an inch. I will of course keep you updated throughout this event right here on the website and on social media. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
