A look at the Year overall through October 15th
I like to go back at least once a week to see how we are doing overall during the year compared to previous years. There are two areas i focus on. One is the average temperature and the other is the average rainfall. I wanted to share with you all how we are doing through October 15th. After yesterdays rainfall we will jump up a few places in the overall standings but those are not reflected in this report.
Let's start with the average temperature for the year, the month of October and the fall season.
Month of October
It's no secret we have had a very mild month so far for October. The good news is we will see those highs drop more as we move through the remainder of the month as we have cooler air on the way. Currently overall this October is tied for 4th overall with an average high of 65.6º Look at that number one slot from October 1919.
Fall Season 2017
This is currently the second warmest Fall Season on record. We will see a drop in the rankings as we continue to move through the season as cooler temps are settling in for us. I wouldn't worry to much about us catching that Fall 1984 ranking
Year To Date Average Temperatures
The good news is we have continued to drop in these rankings over the past few weeks. Just a few weeks ago we were on pace to have the warmest year on record for Rowan County. Currently we are down to the 17th warmest year overall. I think we will continue to drop down this list as we move through the remainder of the year. A big plus is the fact that we only had 17 days of temperatures at 90 or more.
Now let's shift to rainfall through October 15th and how we rank in these areas,
October Rainfall
Currently this October is the 9th driest on record. Now again keep in mind these totals do not include yesterdays rainfall. That will make a huge difference in where we stand overall for October.
Fall Season Rainfall
This is currently the 36th driest Fall Season on record for the county. Once yesterdays totals get factored in I think the focus will shift from direst to wettest on record. Those totals will put us on the higher end of overall rainfall totals for the Fall Season overall.
Year To Date Rainfall Total
Through October 15th this is the 24th wettest year on record for the county. Once yesterdays totals get factored in we will be in the Top 20. I don't think this will go down as the wettest year on record but we certainly have an opportunity to finish in the top 10 or 15 overall.
I will of course continue to update you on these totals periodically as we move through the Fall and Early Winter to close out the year. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
