2017 Total Solar Eclipse Forecast Monday 8/14 Update

Monday, August 14, 2017 - 8:58am

The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse is now just 1 week away! The forecast is changing a little more in our favor from my first look forecast yesterday. I will continue to post these updates daily until we arrive to the time of the Eclipse. Here is the latest look at what we can expect. Please remember we are still far enough out this will most likely change a time or two before we get a real handle on what to expect.

My Biggest concern with being able to view the eclipse at this point is rain chances. Startling tomorrow I will begin to put a percentage on that chance. The good news is over the past 24 hours the model runs have leaned toward the chance that rainfall is a little less likely during the eclipse. We could see a portion of the beginning of the moon getting between the earth and the sun being somewhat rainy or overcast. The main thing is being able to see the peak of the eclipse.

The models are starting to show a better chance for viewing as well as the amount of potential cloud cover is down quite a bit form what we were seeing in the models yesterday. The southeast portion of the county could see thicker cloud cover. However, the beauty of that is you would not have to drive to far out of your way to get some clearing.

Last but not least the High temperature at the time of the beginning of the eclipse. I like to keep this in focus. The high at the start of the eclipse will be around 87º as we near the peak the temperature will drop as the suns rays will become blocked more and more by the moon. Taking the radioactive warming out of the atmosphere and the temperature right now could drop into the mid to upper 60's during the first part of the eclipse as the moon blocks out more and more of the sun. This will be something interesting to keep an eye on.

I will continue to provide updates right here and on social media as we get closer and closer to the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
