Extreme Heat This Weekemd

Tuesday, July 18, 2017 - 11:08am

Hopefully you read the tips on the cover photo very carefully. You are going to need those tips this weekend! We have our hottest temperatures of the year coming this Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Our best chance of hitting triple digit temps so far this summer.

This coming Friday models are indicating we will hit 97 for the high here in the county. I would not be surprised to see some areas around the county hit the 100 mark. The record high on Friday is 105 and I think we will be lucky enough not to break that record.

On Saturday the models are showing a high of 97 as well. The record for Saturday is also 105 so hopefully we will leave that record in tact as well.

On Sunday we get a little bit of a cool down but temperatures will still be hot with a high of around 96. The record high is 100 set back in 1940. We are going to be very close to tying that record. I will certainly keep an eye on that one as we go through the day on Sunday.

Please take the time to understand heat related illnesses that are shown in the diagram below. I put this on in both English and Spanish as I know we have many residents in the county who are Spanish that work on farms.

During extremely hot and humid weather, your body's ability to cool itself is challenged. When the body heats too rapidly to cool itself properly, or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, body temperature rises and you or someone you care about may experience a heat-related illness. It is important to know the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate responses.

Don't forget your pets and how the heat can affect them even if you are just going to take them for a walk. The pavement can burn their feet.

The most important thing to remember this weekend is do not leave anyone in your car unattended with the motor not running and the Air Conditioner not on! Watch the video below and see how quickly things can get dangerous!

Please do everything you can this weekend to keep you, your loved ones and your pets safe from the extreme heat that will be around the county. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
