January 2017. How did it rank???

Wednesday, February 1, 2017 - 10:52am

As you obviously remember from the cover photo. We enjoyed some snowfall in the month of January. Of course this was exciting for some and others would rather have missed it all together. January was certainly a roller coaster month in terms of temperatures and it had moments of being above average in some categories and below average in other categories. So let's take a look at how January ranked overall based on average temperature, precipitation & snowfall.

The average temperature in January was 44.7º this ranked 24th all time for the month of January in recorded history for the county. The warmest January every was back in 1908 with an average temperature of 53.4º

The amount of precipitation we got around the county was certainly above average for the month of January. A much needed and pleasant surprise to eliminate the drought from the county. Officially we ended the month with 4.48 inches of rainfall at the Rowan County Airport. 33rd wettest all time for the month of January in the county. The wettest January on record was 1936 with 10.70 inches of rainfall

The snowfall we received also above average not only for the month of January but also for the winter season as a whole! We officially had 4.9 inches of snowfall at the Rowan County Airport 20th all time for the month of January in Rowan County. Not even close to the all time January record of 20.5 inches of snowfall in January of 1962.

For the month and the year we are currently in a surplus for rainfall and snowfall with a surplus of 1.31 inches of rainfall and 2.7 inches of snowfall for the county on the year. This is encouraging as we are now officially in the month of February. Here's to hoping February brining us enough rainfall to stay on the positive side of things. Whatever the weather may bring. Rowan County Weather will be right here to post it for you!
